The mission of Lutheran High School of Indianapolis is to prepare young adults for Christian life while providing academic excellence in a Christ-centered environment. We continue this mission through our wrestling program. Life can be tough. Wrestling is tougher! Wrestlers learn life lessons on how to embrace challenge, find courage, be accountable, and work hard towards individual and team goals. We prepare our wrestlers to tackle any challenge that comes their way and help them to grow from successes and failures. As Dan Gable put it, “once you wrestle, the rest in life is easy.”

Our head wrestling coach, Greg Hughes, was a state ranked and state qualifying wrestler in Illinois. He graduated from Naperville North, a 6A high school in the Chicago-land area with a deep wrestling tradition that celebrates the success of several individual state champions as well as multiple state placing teams in the 80s-90s. Coach Hughes was captain of a team that won second in state in Illinois in 1992 dual team competition.

Lutheran’s coaching staff includes Josh Vaughn, 3 time semi-state qualifier in Indiana, and Jake and Brett Reid, both regional qualifiers.

In 8 seasons, Lutheran’s wrestling program has produced:

16 Conference finalists                       6 Semi State Qualifiers

6 Conference champs                         6 1A/2A State Qualifiers

2 Marion County Champs                  3 1A/2A State Placers

17 Regional qualifiers                        1 IHSAA State Champ

Lutheran High School’s wrestling program offers unique opportunities. The team is a small family unit that supports each other’s growth and development. Our wrestlers benefit from greater levels of one-one instruction, mentoring and varsity wrestling opportunities than most other programs in Indiana.

Please contact Coach Hughes if you have any questions about the program.

Since wrestling is not a classed sport, these boys competed against schools that are literally 20x's the size of LHS and come out on top, literally! We are so proud Hayden, his coaches, Greg Hughes and Jake Reid, and the entire wrestling team.  These young men have represented LHS so well with their commitment to excellence and dedication to hard work.

God's Plan

by Saints Wrestling Coach, Greg Hughes

God has a plan for everyone.  It’s hard to know what it is or understand it, but God has a funny way of revealing things in time.  When Hayden Filipovich won the state championship Saturday, the energy and excitement was so much fun.  He’s such a great kid, it couldn’t have happened to a better young man.  When something big like that happens, there’s these small, quiet moments you have right after…these moments where things return to normal, and you soak it in.  continue reading
