Welcome to the Lutheran High School Saints Tennis Program!
I’d like to invite you to participate in this year’s upcoming Boys' season. We have an active varsity and junior varsity team that accepts players from all grade and ability levels. If you are an incoming freshmen looking to make friends and participate in a sport, if you are a present student looking to try a fall sport this year, or if you are a current fall athlete wanting to try a new sport, you will find a welcome spot on our team.
Never played tennis before? That is not a problem. Every year, we have numerous players come out for the team who have no prior tennis experience. You can learn the sport as the season progresses and play against players from other schools who are also at the beginner level. With hard work and four years of off-season practice, novice freshman players can become outstanding varsity athletes in the tennis program.
If you are considering whether or not you want to play this year, here are some reasons you should say yes to tennis:
Get fit - Tennis players are almost constantly in motion, and using nearly every muscle in their body. In addition to short sprints, there are also constant changes of direction, and motion in every possible angle. It builds muscle and stamina, improves flexibility, fine-tunes coordination and enhances overall health and fitness.
Learn Life Lessons - In order to be successful, tennis players must develop a work ethic, learn sportsmanship, accept responsibility, manage mistakes, learn to compete and cope with pressure and adversity. All of these life skills have value off the tennis court as well.
Develop your mind - Tennis is as mental a sport as any. You can be a great player, but not fulfill your potential if your mental game is weak. Playing tennis will help you get in good shape, but it also stimulates your mind in ways that other sports do not. Great tennis players are all mentally strong, and playing tennis will only fortify your mind, helping you out in other areas of your life as well!
Develop friendships — The tennis community has some of the nicest people around. You’re bound to make friends through tennis, on the court and off. And as an added bonus, when you get older, it’s great for making business connections.
Minimal Injuries — Unlike other sports, tennis is very safe. Most injuries that players do sustain come from overuse, but with proper exercises, even those can be minimized or eliminated.
Learn Teamwork and Sportsmanship — Whether it is team play, doubles play or tournament play, tennis develops your ability to communicate and work together to achieve success.
It’s the sport of a lifetime — Children as young as 3 can start playing this sport, and you can basically keep playing until you can no longer walk. People who live past 100 can still play the game. What other sport can you play from age 3 to 103?
It’s actually affordable — Some people think that tennis is an elitist sport because some lessons and certain rackets can be expensive. But tennis actually quite affordable. All you need to get started is a beginner racket from a sporting goods store or racket club (anything ranging from $60-$100) and a good pair of tennis shoes. Once you have those key pieces, you can find a free court and play anywhere. Note: I stress the proper footwear as tennis shoes, not running shoes or cross trainers. Improper footwear increases your risk for rolling an ankle).
